Response to Has change come to Philippine education? (Hernando-Malipot, 19 May 2019)

Our short answer to the question is yes. Change has come to Philippine education: we have more children going, staying, and completing basic education. Does this mean that the work is done? No, we still have more ways to go.

We at Philippine Business for Education believe that we have much to celebrate. Through the efforts of government, the private sector, and civil society, education reforms throughout various administrations have steadily improved education inputs that have led to lower dropout rates, higher completion rates, and more of the poor going to college.

Those who have long dropped out are being brought back to school through a strengthened Alternative Learning System.

But, we should not stop there. We need to continue our policies that have democratized access, and do more to improve education quality and emphasize learning. This is the new policy frontier that we all need to conquer. Together, we have no doubt we will get there.
