Partners come together for K to 12 in CDO

Cagayan de Oro City – Over thirty stakeholders gathered together last Monday for a mixer-workshop on the K to 12 program. The mixer was organized by the local government of Cagayan de Oro through the office of City Mayor Oscar Moreno and the Technical Education Skills Development and Employment Committee (TESDEC), and facilitated by Philippine Business for Education (PBEd). Its objective was to look at how the program has fared so far in the city, two years into its implementation, current challenges and successes and eventually - come up with plans and projects to ensure that the K to 12 system is better aligned with the needs of industry.

Attending the program were members of the TESDEC representing various industries in the city, government agencies including the Department of Education, led by Schools Division Superintendent Jonathan de Peña, and K to 12 coordinators from different senior high schools.

Highlights of the workshop included the need for proper coordination among stakeholders – including other government agencies involved in the education to employment pipeline such as the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Another point of interest was the need for data, particularly on employment demand as this would better inform the Department of Education on what tracks and strands to offer, and inform parents and students of tracks to choose as well.

PBEd is a non-profit organization that advocates for workforce development and encourages partnership among government, industry, and academe to ensure better alignment from education to employment. One of PBEd’s advocacies is the support of the K to 12 program by encouraging more companies to participate in K to 12 training and employment through its project First Future Ph supported by the Citi Foundation.
